prayer

when you pray,  what is it that answers?

At the moment when we pray we are fairly silent, in a state of receptivity; then our own subconscious brings a momentary clarity.  , and in that moment   you are fairly receptive; your conscious, active mind is comparatively still, so the unconscious projects itself into that and you have an answer. It is surely not an answer from reality, from the immeasurable - it is your own unconscious responding.

Reality must come to you; you cannot go to it.

when the mind is  comparatively still; when you hear the inner voice, it is your own voice projecting itself into that comparatively still mind.  The mind can receive reality only when it is absolutely still, not demanding, not craving, not longing, not asking, whether for yourself, for the nation or for another.

When the mind is absolutely still, when desire ceases, then only reality comes into being.

At the moment when we pray What we receive will be the response of the unconscious layers of  own mind which project themselves into the conscious; that still, small voice which directs us is not the real but only the response of the unconscious.

In this problem of prayer there is also the question of concentration.

I am interested in so-called meditation but my thoughts are distracted, so I fix my mind on a picture, an image, or an idea and exclude all other thoughts. This process of concentration, which is exclusion, is considered to be a means of meditating but the mind wanders all over the place. There is the constant interruption of other ideas, other thoughts, other emotions and you try to push them away; you spend your time battling with your thoughts. This process you call meditation.

your thoughts keep on multiplying, increasing, interrupting, so you spend your energy in exclusion, in warding off; pushing away;

Meditation is not an exclusive process - exclusive in the sense of warding off, building resistance against encroaching ideas.

Prayer is not meditation and concentration as exclusion is not meditation

What is meditation?

Concentration is not meditation, because where there is interest it is comparatively easy to concentrate on something. A general who is planning war, butchery, is very concentrated. A business man making money is very concentrated - he may even be ruthless, putting aside every other feeling and concentrating completely on what he wants. A man who is interested in anything is naturally, spontaneously concentrated. Such concentration is not meditation, it is merely exclusion.

So what is meditation?

meditation is understanding [w/o xclusion,prayer]- meditation of the heart is understanding. How can there be understanding if there is exclusion? How can there be understanding when there is petition, supplication?

In understanding there is peace, there is freedom; that which you understand, from that you are liberated. Merely to concentrate or to pray does not bring understanding. Understanding is the very basis, the fundamental process of meditation

neither prayer nor concentration leads to understanding. They merely lead to obstinacy, to a fixation, to illusion. Whereas meditation, in which there is understanding, brings about freedom, clarity and integration.

What, then, do we mean by understanding? Understanding means giving right significance, right valuation, to all things.

To be ignorant is to give wrong values; the very nature of stupidity is the lack of comprehension of right values.

Understanding comes into being when there are right values, when right values are established. And how is one to establish right values - the right value of property, the right value of relationship, the right value of ideas?

For the right values to come into being, you must understand the thinker. If I don't understand the thinker, which is myself what I choose has no meaning; that is if I don't know myself, then my action, my thought, has no foundation whatsoever. Therefore self-knowledge is the beginning of meditation - not the knowledge that you pick up from my books, from authorities, from gurus, but the knowledge that comes into being through self-inquiry, which is self-awareness.

Meditation is the beginning of self-knowledge and without self-knowledge there is no meditation. If I don't understand the ways of my thoughts, of my feelings, if I don't understand my motives, my desires, my demands, my pursuit of patterns of action, which are ideas - if I do not know myself, there is no foundation for thinking;

the thinker who merely asks, prays, or excludes, without understanding himself, must inevitably end in confusion, in illusion.

The beginning of meditation is self-knowledge, which means being aware of every movement of thought and feeling, knowing all the layers of my consciousness, not only the superficial layers but the hidden, the deeply concealed activities.

To know the deeply concealed activities, the hidden motives, responses, thoughts and feelings, there must be tranquillity in the conscious mind; that is the conscious mind must be still in order to receive the projection of the unconscious.

The superficial, conscious mind is occupied with its daily activities, with earning a livelihood, deceiving others, exploiting others, running away from problems - all the daily activities of our existence. That superficial mind must understand the right significance of its own activities and thereby bring tranquillity to itself. It cannot bring about tranquillity, stillness, by mere regimentation, by compulsion, by discipline. It can bring about tranquillity, peace, stillness, only by understanding its own activities, by observing them, by being aware of them, by seeing its own ruthlessness, how it talks to the servant, to the wife, to the daughter, to the mother and so on.

When the superficial, conscious mind 1s thus fully aware of all its activities, through that understanding it becomes spontaneously quiet,

not drugged by compulsion or

regimented by desire;

then it is in a position to receive the intimation, the hints of the unconscious, of the many, many hidden layers of the mind - the racial instincts, the buried memories, the concealed pursuits, the deep wounds that are still unhealed.

It is only when all these have projected themselves and are understood, when the whole consciousness is unburdened, unfettered by any wound, by any memory whatsoever, that it is in a position to receive the eternal.

Meditation is self-knowledge and without self-knowledge there is no meditation. If you are not aware of all your responses all the time, if you are not fully conscious, fully cognizant of your daily activities, merely to lock yourself in a room and sit down in front of a picture of your guru, of your Master, to meditate, is an escape, because without self-knowledge there is no right thinking and, without right thinking, what you do has no meaning, however noble your intentions are.

Thus prayer has no significance without self-knowledge but when there is self-knowledge there is right thinking and hence right action. When there is right action, there is no confusion and therefore there is no supplication to someone else to lead you out of it. A man who is fully aware is meditating; he does not pray, because he does not want anything. Through prayer, through regimentation, through repetition and all the rest of it, you can bring about a certain stillness, but that is mere dullness, reducing the mind and the heart to a state of weariness. it is drugging the mind; and exclusion, which you call concentration, does not lead to reality - no exclusion ever can. What brings about understanding is self-knowledge, and it is not very difficult to be aware if there is right intention. If you are interested to discover the whole process of yourself - not merely the superficial part but the total process of your whole being - then it is comparatively easy. If you really want to know yourself, you will search out your heart and your mind to know their full content and when there is the intention to know, you will know. Then you can follow, without condemnation or justification, every movement of thought and feeling; by following every thought and every feeling as it arises you bring about tranquillity which is not compelled, not regimented, but which is the outcome of having no problem, no contradiction.

It is like the pool that becomes peaceful, quiet, any evening when there is no wind; when the mind is still, then that which is immeasurable comes into being.

the mind process

When the mind sees that any action on   its own part is still the functioning of memory, and therefore that   it is incapable of finding truth, what then is the state of the mind?      detach ourselves from the past and enjoy what we have   right now, how much better will we feel? We must learn to flow   from one moment to the next. be composed, unruffled,   and to abandon all seeking.      the understanding of   passion frees one from passion because it reveals its painful   character. The knowledge of pain is freedom   from pain. Nobody, having known pain, can want it. And when   there is no desire, when the mind is neither   disturbed by passion nor searching for anything, then at that very   moment, at that calm and tranquil moment you   experience your real authentic being. The soul declares itself   when passion disappears.      The mind must be empty   but watchful, and in that state of tranquillity the door to truth   opens. Truth is realized only out of emptiness and   one’s whole life is subsequently transformedMeditation means   becoming actionless.      In action we come into contact with the outside   world; in inaction, with ourselves. When we are not doing   anything we become aware of what we are, but we are   constantly involved in different activities and do not know   ourselves. We do not even remember that we exist.   We are deeply preoccupied. At least the body rests but the mind   does not rest at all. Awake, we think; asleep, we   dream. Engrossed in these constant preoccupations and activities,   we simply forget ourselves. In the press of our own affairs we lose ourselves. We have become lost, not in the crowds of other people, but in our own thoughts, in our own dreams, in our own preoccupations and activities. We have become lost in ourselves.      Meditationis theway  to extricate ourselves from this self-created crowd, from this mental wanderlust   \\      Wherever   and whenever creativity happens, it is always through Him. Ask   all the great poets. They will say that whenever great poems   have descended on them, they were, at the most, passive   receivers. It happened; they were not the creators.      The idea that you can create is simply your illusion. All creativity   belongs to Him. Even through you, whatsoever is created He is   the creator.       To understand this is a great illumination.       To understand this the ego disappears; to understand this is to allow   Him to take total possession of you. You become an instrument,   and in small things, great things become possible. Then He moves   through you. If you dance, He dances. You are, at the most, the   field where He dances. When you sing, He sings. You are, at the   most, the flute, the empty flute, which just becomes a passage to   it. At the most you can allow -- it is always He who is doing   things.   This is what I mean when I say `float', when I say `flow with the   river'. Allow His creativity to flow through you. Don't impose any   pattern on Him; don't impose your will.       what you do is not the question   -- -what quality do you bring to it while doing it?

By and by the child comes to understand one thing: that   whatsoever is cheerful for him has something wrong about it.   Whatsoever makes him happy is wrong, and whatsoever makes   him sad and serious is right and good and accepted.   Be happy and you are virtuous; be unhappy and you are   committing what religious people have called sin.

if you can't enjoy, then what is this life for?

the people who cannot enjoy anything (love, life, food,   a beautiful scene, a sunset, a morning, beautiful clothes,   a good bath -- small things, ordinary things), if you   cannot enjoy this things,   [ and there are people who cannot enjoy anything:]    they become interested in God.   They are the most impossible people; they can never   reach to God.

God enjoys these trees, otherwise why does   He go on creating them? He is not fed up at all, not at   all. For millennia He has been working on trees and   flowers and birds, and He goes on listening. He goes on   replacing: new beings, new earths, new planets. He is   really very, very colorful! Look at life, watch it, and you   will see the heart of God -- how it is.

When you are ready, when the sadness has disappeared and you   can dance, when the heaviness has disappeared and you can   sing, when the heavy weight of conditioning is no more on your   heart and you can flow --

God happens.

God is not a thing that   exists; It is something that happens. It is a dynamic, organic unity.

the moment you choose, you have lost your   total freedom, you are left with only a part.

remain   choiceless, your freedom remains total.

there is only one thing which is totally free and that is   choiceless awareness. Everything else is limited.

all   kinds of   language and knowledge and all your daily   activities as you respond to people and adapt to   circumstances,

through   so   many   upsets   and   downfalls,

whether joyous or angry, good or bad,   favorable or adverse -- these are all trivial   matters, the branches.

be spontaneously   aware and knowing as you are going along with   circumstances,

my take EGO in relationships

 ego in relationships

main-to prevent engulfment -unconditional love/selfless

once ego dissolves-divine self is seen

1.keep weak egos at lower levels -

and be below strong egos

2.some cases of same level egos-

  sharing of ego-space-attraction/affection/care/sympathy/empathy/slefish-love

prevent engul thro defense mechanisms[strong egos]

3.same level weak egos -surrender -subservience

conrol of weak egos by domination/codependancy/emo blackmail/

4.strong egos-difficulty to share-marital problems/remain single

5.child mother-happiness as newborn no seperate ego -c-as ego develops conflicts result in dissatisfaction/detachment

[teen egos]-still due to birthing -mother more attched

not for father who maintains his seperate ego at all times

6.marriage-conditional sharing and control of another ego

sharing of experiences/physical and emotional closeness/

sometimes]sympathy/care-brings egos closer/no merger

as nature of ego will not allow-rare cases of long term marriages

my take EGO

 start from ego- state

a state of total ignorance of the WHY of life

complete absorpion in MAYA

about life and afterlife

born of fear insecurity

ego stroking

from newborn requiring warmth and love

children requiring approval ,fulfil material needs

youth requiring ego stroking from peers/opp gender

employed-requiring approval from  higher ups/colleagues

married-spousal stroking-children - wel behaved intelligent

old age-from children d-s-inlaw(spouse reaction doesnt matter after a certaain years of marriage)

lovers-mutual ego stroking

pets-owners approval-affection(many singleegos adopt pets for this reason)

plants-respond to loving care by growers

social  media users- from other users-group members-likes-

unemployed-parents-peers-siblings

singles-other singles-whatsapp

self stroking-life circumstances-karmic inheritance(inflated ego)

govt-votes

public-recognition by govt/parties-freebies

tv users-reality shows-children -singers-talent shows

why required?

ego is lonely-having been (un)knowingly seperated from its root source

ego this is full of minute holes-sieve-

each time it is stroked -one hole is filled up-provides a small measure of happiness

an individual can get ego strokes from a variety of sources-

spouse-parents-siblings-gr-parents/children-peers-opp gender-employees/employers

govt-pets-plants

what happens when there is no stroking

ego becomes miserable-depressed -low self-worth -disinterested in stroking other egos-anger

loneliness occurs(physical mental)

after a certain stage-the stroking begins to pall-self stroking also

realisation dawns-need for diminishing ego

even people with low self worth -beggars-physically challenged-sick-poor-ugly-low in caste hierarchy...

expect and like acertain amt of  ego stroke-witness beggar couple-(single beggars -adopt pets)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

lonely people-lack of resources for stroking -inadequate resources(incompatible spouse/employer/parents)

easy for two lonely people to sync -mutual stroking-alternate resources-careers/pets/books/religion/tv

stroking can be false -to achieve selfish ends  or real-to improve self-worth

another category-professional counselling -not real but end is for self-improvement of patients.

reverse ego stroking-reducing ones sense of self-worth-hurting  the ego-

results in anger/depression-rare cases provides impetus to improve self worth and to minimise ego-hurting weaknesses.

"successful" marriages mainly dependant upon stroking-better if mutual.

problem is many resort to selfish stroking-which when realised leads to trouble.

giving children to male spouse/in laws-stroking both ways

sometimes ego is x unable to accept stoking (false or real) from another

-u may not like the person-ambivalence

-u may entertaing strong adverse feelings

-generation gap/other social/cultural gaps/gender gaps

Living wisely

Living wisely involves making conscious, present-moment choices that foster inner peace, spiritual growth, and alignment with a higher purpose, rather than being driven by ego or fleeting emotions. It requires cultivating self-awareness, nurturing meaningful relationships, and adopting a "big-picture" perspective on life to reduce suffering and enhance overall well-being.

Key Principles of Living Wisely

Mindful Presence: Focusing on the current moment reduces the influence of the mind, leading to less suffering and more conscious, deliberate actions.

Spiritual Perspective: Viewing life through a lens of divine wisdom or a "big-picture" perspective (understanding one's origin and destiny) allows for better decision-making.

Relationship Investment: Prioritizing quality time with loved ones and fostering positive connections, rather than neglecting them for short-term gains.

Self-Care & Energy Management: Protecting oneself from negative vibrations by surrounding oneself with calming, uplifting environments, music, and thoughts.

Lifelong Learning: Approaching life as a student, seeking to learn from experiences rather than acting as a teacher.

Practical Applications

Daily Reflection: Reading or meditating on wisdom literature to start the day with positive intention.

Conscious Choices: Pausing before acting to consider if a decision aligns with one's highest self.

Empathy: Actively reaching out to help others, particularly those experiencing emotional or spiritual pain.

Gratitude: Cultivating a sense of joy and appreciation to maintain a positive, transformative life perspective.

For many, this path also includes seeking divine guidance to navigate life's challenge

Beautiful thoughts

Handling senses sensibly

Nityananda

Mind-Intelligence-Ego is the spot where the decision-making is happening. When we just try to conquer the senses, we will fail again and again. If we fail two or three times we will lose the confidence to try again. If we fail in a fight with our senses, we will automatically start thinking that it is impossible, and we will lose confidence. We need intelligence to progress in this path.

learn the science of creating the space of completion to conquer the senses. If we try to work from the wrong side out of incompletion, from the side of the senses, we will never be able to succeed. If we try to create more pressure on the cooker we will not be able to open the cooker lid. First, we need to put out the fire, the energy supply. Putting out the fire is doing completion with our root patterns. The ego or root patterns or the intelligence, the place from where we make decisions, is continuously supplying energy to our senses. So all we need to do is to work at the level of the mind and not at the level of the senses to become jitātmanaḥ. If we try to work at the level of the senses, we will create only more and more perverted desires, leading to more and more incompletions.(Nitya)

Living in the Present wisely and earnestly

Start Living in the Present wisely and earnestly

Do not

-mourn for the past,

-worry about the future

-anticipate troubles,

1. Remove unneeded possessions: use the freedom to shape  life today around your most important values

2. Smile.

3. Fully appreciate the moments of today.

4. Forgive past hurts.

5. Love what you do.

6. Dream about the future,  work hard today.

7. Don’t dwell on past accomplishments.

8. Stop worrying.

9. Think beyond old solutions to problems.

10. Conquer addictions.

If you can only live one moment at a time, you might as well make it the present.

"Whenever you feel anxious about your future or your past, just breathe,""

You Are Not Your Thoughts

Life unfolds in the present.

do not let the present slip away

When you worry about the future and ruminate about what's past

You allow time to rush past unobserved and unseized, and squander the precious seconds of your life.

Don’t be always doing something

Allow a  little time and practice stillness and calm.

At work we fantasize about being on vacation;

on vacation, we worry about the work piling up on our desks.

We dwell on intrusive memories of the past or fret about what may or may not happen in the future.

Do not allow your "monkey minds," to vault from thought to thought like monkeys swinging from tree to tree.

Do not let your thoughts control you.

feel more in control of your mind and your life,

find the sense of balance that eludes you

step out of this current, pause, and…..

rest in stillness—stop doing and focus on just being.

live more in the moment.

Living in the moment—also called mindfulness—is a state of active, open, intentional attention on the present.

As  you practice becoming mindful,

realize that you are not your thoughts;

become an observer of your thoughts from moment to moment without judging them.

be with your thoughts as they are, neither grasping at them nor pushing them away.

Cultivate a nonjudgmental awareness of the present

Mindfulness benefits.

reduces stress, boosts immune functioning, reduces chronic pain, lowers blood pressure, and helps  cope with cancer.

reducing stress, spending a few minutes a day actively focusing on living in the moment reduces the risk of heart disease.

You become happier,  exuberant, empathetic, and  secure.

higher self-esteem and more accepting of your  weaknesses.

reduces impulsivity and reactivity that underlie depression, binge eating, and attention problems.

can hear negative feedback without feeling threatened.

fight less with  spouse   more accommodating and less defensive.

mindful couples have more satisfying relationships

Escape Being a Victim of Time & Truly Live in the Present Moment.

Of course, it’s natural to spend moments of thought in the past or in daydreams of the future.

Identifying impending dangers through associations with things that have happened in the past is important for self-preservation.

But

Do not let your life be dictated by thoughts and emotions attached to past events and potential future outcomes.

Be neutrally centered……see through life’s lens with clarity and naked awareness –

Leading to contentment and understanding .

just because we’re used to doing something regularly doesn’t mean it is good for us, or the right way to live.

identify time for what it is.

Time is a human concept.

The watch on your wrist and the clock on the wall mean nothing to Mother Nature. To her, life is one evolving moment – a perpetual cycle of interdependent impermanence.

we use time as a reference point for organising our lives and documenting history. It doesn’t actually exist.

Time is an illusion.

The past doesn’t exist and neither does the future. The only true reference point we have to this moment in time, and this thing we label “existence”,

is a feeling of presence, of being here in this body, of seeing the world through these eyes.

This is all that can exist, because this is what you feel right now. You can’t feel the past or the future, but you can feel what it feels like to touch something right now, to see something, to hear something.

The concept of time deludes us into concerning ourselves with its passing and impending arrival. stops us enjoying this “presence” we feel.

We are duped into remaining in one of two states: The first, one of dwelling in the past and mulling over what has happened.

The second, one of waiting amd constantly anticipating what is to come, if and when…

For example:

don’t be

– too busy thinking about getting work finished by the deadline —give yourself a chance to enjoy it

– so stressed out trying to do your best work to impress your boss —-you prevent yourself being able to perform at your highest potential .

– so distracted by thoughts of Monday morning that you spoil the time spent with your children on the weekend

- so caught up in regrets of the past that you prevent opportunity blossoming in the present.

- let the opinions of others, formed through actions you took in the past, stop you being who you (are) want to be in the present

allowing yourself to be a victim of time – a victim of the past and a slave to a future that is yet to unravel – you will carry with you a sense of unease-be susceptible to stress, agitation and feel generally uncomfortable .

Wherever you are, commit to being there, completely. Life will take care of the rest.

Transcend desire ..osho

Osho

desire for money is not really the desire for money, it is the desire to expand.

And the same is the case with all other desires.

Men want more power, more fame, longer life, better health, but what are they desiring in these different things?

The same, exactly the same:

they want to be more. They don’t want to remain confined, they don’t want to be limited.

It hurts to feel that you are definable, because if you are definable then you are just an object, a thing, a commodity. It hurts that you have limitations, because to have limitations means to be imprisoned.

But all  objects of desire, sooner or later, disappoint.

Money becomes possible one day, and yet expansion has not happened;

you may have a little more freedom of choice, but that does not satisfy.

The desire was for the infinite, and money cannot purchase the infinite.

Yes, you have more power, you are more well-known, but that doesn’t really matter in the long run.

Millions of people have lived on this earth and were very famous, and now nobody even knows their names. Everything has disappeared into dust — dust into dust, not even traces are left.

Where is Alexander the Great? What is he? Would you like to be a dead Alexander the Great or an alive beggar? Ask yourself, and your being will say it is better to be alive and be a beggar than to be dead and be an Alexander.

“ watch carefully……money, power, prestige — nothing satisfies.

On the contrary, they make you more discontented.

Why? — because when you were poor there was a hope that one day the money was going to happen and all would be settled and settled forever, and then you would relax and enjoy. Now that has happened, and there seems to be no sign of any relaxation. In fact, you are more tense than before, you are more anxiety-ridden than before.

“Money has brought a few blessings, but in the same measure it has brought many curses too.

bigger house, but less peace.

bigger bank balance, but bigger madness, anxiety, neurosis, psychosis.

The rich man becomes hopeless. He knows now the money will go on increasing and nothing is going to happen — just death, only death. He has tasted all kinds of things; now he only feels a tastelessness. A kind of death has already happened, because he cannot conceive of how to fulfill that desire for expansion.

“But desire in itself is not wrong. The desire for money, the desire for power, the desire for prestige, are wrong objects for desire — let it be very clear. By having wrong objects of desire, desire itself does not become wrong. You can have a sword and you can kill somebody — that does not make the sword something wrong. You can also save somebody with the same sword. Poison can kill and poison can become medicine too. In the right hands, poison is nectar; in the wrong hands, nectar is poison.

“This is the essential wisdom of all the buddhas of all the ages. What the priests say is one thing; what the buddhas have brought to the world is totally different, it is diametrically opposite.

“Desire has to be purified and transformed, because it is your energy — you don’t have any other energy. How to transform desire? One way, the ordinary way, the mediocre way, is to change the object. Don’t go after money, start going after God. You are frustrated with money — become religious, go to the church, to the temple, to the mosque. Let your desire have a new object called God, which is as illusory as the object called money, even more illusory, because what do you know about God? Money at least is something visible, objective; you have known it, you have seen it. What do you know of God? You have only heard the word. God remains a word unless experienced. God remains an empty word unless you pour some content into it through your own existential experience.

art of Listening

O

The Listening Heart

Constance Hostler

One afternoon as I worked in our garden a little neighbor on her way home from school stopped by to chat and as she rambled on about the ups and downs of her day she would often interrupt herself and say: "Are you listening?" To which I dutifully replied: "Of course, Susan." Then I would make some additional comments so as to reassure her that I was not inattentive. As a matter of fact at that particular moment I was more interested in the plants I was setting out than I was in little Susan and her problems and so I did not get the "feel" of what was going on in the child's heart and mind.

"Are you listening?" That remark came back to me several times during the evening and set me to thinking. How often in our contact with people we only half listen and thereby miss real opportunities, for in every meeting with others something can be given or something received — if we are listening with our hearts. This interchange of give and take need not necessarily express itself in any outward way but like a magnetic current may pass from one to another. You may leave a friend or even a fellow bus passenger with a feeling of warmth, of reassurance, merely because of your own inner attitude of quiet confidence, or of buoyancy because of your cheerfulness. And little do we know sometimes just how desperately needed such comfort is.

One evening an ill and elderly lady told me that as she was standing outside a doctor's office that morning, waiting to be picked up by her son, a young woman passed by and gave her such a warm and friendly smile that it lifted her heart and brightened her whole day. We have all had such experiences. Outwardly we may seem bright and gay, but inwardly our hearts may be heavy. And then we meet someone — it may be a stranger — and the power of a sympathetic nature reinforces us interiorly.

Some possess this responsive quality naturally; others express it intermittently and unconsciously according to their moods; but why not do it consciously, and as an expression of love for our fellow man? By listening with our hearts we can become truly sensitive to the needs of others. Also, since this is a two-way street, we shall become more receptive; and thus aware of the beauty and strength in the lives of those about us, we shall thereby realize an enrichment of character from both experiences.

Looking at a beautiful oil painting we realize that an artist is perceptive to ranges of color beyond our present ordinary vision; listening to beautiful music we realize that a musician's awareness of sound is beyond our present powers of hearing. Reading the writings of the great philosophers we realize that the breadth and depth of their mind or consciousness enable them to express great and universal ideas which bring enlightenment to mankind. This, too, they can do to a much greater degree than the average man.

Studying the lives of the spiritually great — those spiritual teachers of mankind down through the ages — we see a greatness of heart that knows no limits and embraces all in its love and complete understanding. Such a one constantly listens with his heart to the call of every being and gives his life in the service of all humanity. In fact he is the living imbodiment of wisdom and love and compassion.

Between the great and the average man are many steps, many gradations of character unfoldment, just as there are many gradations of color and sound and mental and spiritual perception. But anyone, whenever he wishes, can take these steps in interior expansion since all greatness exists potentially within every man's heart and merely awaits the inner drive or urge that will send it forth into manifestation as a living force in his character. A fine, strong, understanding nature is the noblest objective a man can have and the most direct path toward the attainment of such a worthy ideal is the cultivation of the listening heart.

The next time you are around people listen not only with your mind but listen with your heart for the undertones and overtones of what is being said and you will get the "feel" of the person and what he is trying to express. Thus you will realize that he and you are one and that inwardly you are faced with the same conflicts and problems. You will thereby establish links of sympathetic understanding between yourself and others because you will have learned, to a degree at least, the silent language that expresses itself through the quiet depth of a listening heart
